Woodland Retreat

After 4 years in the making, we are now able to offer two charmingly handbuilt cabins that are dog-friendly, off-grid, and set in an idyllic Welsh woodland, achingly close to Usk, Monmouth and the Wye Valley.

Whilst this experience is not described as glamping, it allows families and friends to experience a true organic and wild stay in their very own woodland.

It’s easy to feel that you’ve entered your own private paradise, as you make your way to the soothing woodland corner that’s home to Honeysucklewood. Impossibly calm and outrageously lovely, the off-grid cabins are beautifully positioned in a small clearing and surrounded by woodland and birdsong.

You have 16 acres of woodland to explore, try a bit of bushcraft or just learn to live at one with nature during this unique and private stay. Suitable for 2 families or two couples or 4 adult friends with sleeping pods that have two small double beds, two further single camp beds with mattresses and option to add further sleeping for additional children. The two pods are a short distance apart so offering complete privacy if you are two couples.

Put simply, you won’t be able to stop yourselves from feeling utterly at peace! Dog-friendly and secluded (there is no other accommodation on the site), you can sit back and enjoy your natural surroundings, from the eco-friendly comfort of your rural retreat. And with features like a harvested rainwater warm shower, solar lighting, and organic composting toilet – not to mention no distracting TV or Wi-Fi – you can relax and reconnect without worrying about your carbon footprint.

The spacious, cabin is well furnished and comfy with lots of carefully thought out little touches, and the wood-burner ensures the main Den remains warm and cosy at any time of year. By day you can gaze out of the huge windows – revelling in that amazing scenery, whatever the weather. There is a small-yet-perfectly-formed kitchen corner, stocked with everything you need (translation: you can pack light!) I will also help with supplies so that your impact on the woodland is minimal. There are woodland sauce pans on a wood burning oven as well as outdoor fires and BBQ.

Collect as much fallen wood for your wood burner, BBQ and campfire as you need to provide you will all the heating and cooking facilities you need during your stay. Your stay will include a lesson in outdoor living and how to stay as environmentally friendly to the woodland as you can. Learning how to share your space harmoniously with Bank Voles, Badgers, mice, spiders, foxes and rabbits while watching the buzzards soar above your head.

In the mood for a long afternoon walk? There are many walks straight from the woodland and you can walk into Usk across the fields in less than an hour. If you want to travel slightly further afield, you could take the car for a short drive into Raglan where there is the best butchers I’ve found and very well stocked local shop. Further on is the historic market town of Monmouth and enjoy the walks along the shimmering river Wye. Chat the day away over a pub lunch, take a canoe along the river to Symons Yat and back again.

Abergavenny offers a lovely shopping experience and there are many interesting pubs and restaurants to discover if it gets too much burning your food on the open fires. However you spend your time, your soul is sure to yearn for the blissful comfort and slow-lane simplicity you’ve discovered at Honeysucklewood… so don’t stay away too long.
